The EGO POWER+ 21″ Select Cut Self-Propelled Mower delivers performance that exceeds the power of gas. The Select Cut Multi-blade Cutting System is equipped with three, interchangeable lower blades; the Mulching Blade, High Lift Bagging Blade and Extended Runtime Blade. The Mulching Blade comes installed on the mower and is ideal for weekly mulching, giving you the mulching quality you would expected from a high-end gas lawn mower. The High Lift Bagging Blade provides extra suction ideal for bagging, leaving your yard free of clippings. The Extended Runtime Blade provides an optimal balance of cut quality and runtime for all around performance. All three blades can be used interchangeably based on your desired cut. The EGO Upper Blade is used in combination with the lower blade chosen to slice the grass into fine fragments; this greatly enhances cutting performance with all grass types. EGO’s Self-Propelled Touch Drive Technology comes from years of research and development. Touch Drive Technology puts complete control of the self-propelled system in the palm of your hands by using pressure to engage the system. Easily control the variable speed with a dial positioned at your fingertips for safe and convenient operation. EGO harnesses the power of the industry’s most advanced 56 Volt 7.5Ah ARC Lithium Fuel Gauge battery by delivering over 60 minutes of cutting time on a single charge.

Walk-Behind Lawn Mowers
At my advanced age I was glad how easy it is to push it around the yard. I bought the self-propelling version thinking I would need it most of the time as was the case with my gas-powered brush mower, a powerful, heavy beast. But not so with the EGO! On even gently uphill grades I push it just fine. I only use the self-propel feature for 10-15% of the time. (Pushing also gives me good aerobic exercise without the cost, time, and air pollution to drive 10 miles to the nearest gym. Just sayin’.)
This mower's design is so intuitive you don’t need to read the manual to understand the controls - but the manual is also well written and full of good tips. Read it. A simple dead-man lever controls the power. It’s super easy to adjust the cutting height. The self-propulsion is activated with just a thumb-push from one hand, and there’s a dial to adjust the forward speed too. I can work around tight corners by controlling and steering from the side, then fall in behind when the way is clear.
The seven positions for the cutting height give superb flexibility from low to high cutting positions with a simple hand move. If the grass grows too high too fast I just cut a notch higher. The motor will stop if the grass is too dense for the mower, to avoid overheating. If that happens, I just move the cutting height a notch higher and resume mowing.
Battery charge is good for “up to” 80 minutes of “light duty use”. I get more like 60 minutes, but I am using the self-propel feature for 10%-15% of the time and its spring now when the grass grows too tall way too fast. Maybe in August I’ll get 80 minutes as the growth rate slows and I’m clipping less than an inch instead of 2+ or more. I used to mow my acre+ yard in 3 hours with the gas beast. Now it me takes three one-hour sessions with breaks between sessions to recharge the battery. I just do something else for an hour while the battery charges. The alternative would be to buy a second battery for $200 and recharge one while using the other.
I found that using this mower turns out to be more about finesse than power. It doesn’t bull through deep grass like a heavy gas mower. Adjust the height, or go slower. Like the manual says. Don’t mow wet grass. Like the manual says. Those conditions tend to clog the blade housing. If your style is to bull ahead against all obstacles, you must learn a new way. The circuit breaker will protect the electric motor from your bullheadedness every time. Learn to work with the tool and you’ll be a better person. Clean out the housing after every mowing. Like the manual says. And listen to the mower subtly changing sounds as the load varies. That can tell you when it’s about to shut off due to heavy load. Listen, learn, and enjoy zen-like harmony with your new instrument.
(1) Twin blade “select cut” is quite effective at giving a neat cut. I’m guessing the arrangement provides a bit more lift to provide an even cut, even with the standard mulching blade.
(2) Mulching seems better than my previous EGO, even traversing in a few longer areas of grass I have caused no clumping as the machine powered through and chopped the blades nicely. Probably that second blade effectiveness again.
(3) Runtime seemed a bit longer, but that may just be my wishful thinking.
(4) Headlights are a bit brighter.
(5) I like the sleek and sporty design, including the way the headlights are integrated. I definitely be styling when cutting my grass, and enjoy the envious looks of my neighbors!
Continued good stuff (reason I bought the EGO again):
(1) Quiet for me and neighborhood.
(2) No hassles with gas, oil, spark plugs, air filter & such.
(3) Light & maneuverable.
(4) Interchangeability of the batteries with the five other EGO tools I enjoy.
But … (don’t you hate that word?): the one negative for me so far is the solution for engaging the self- propelling feature. The two embedded switches in the handle are not as holistic a user interface as the previous model. First time I used the new mower I wanted to move it over two feet after putting battery in; when putting my hand on the handle to give it a slight shove I unintentionally engaged the embedded switch and the mower started zipping away. Same thing when cutting; I typically use the drive when going up the slight rise in my front yard but not at other times and I find it counterintuitive to position my hands on the handle such that it doesn’t engage (particularly when maneuvering the mower when your hands tend to move around a bit). Vice-a-versa, once engaged if your hands move slightly it disengages too easily. I guess I could dial the speed back to zero after disengaging, but repeatedly dialing that off and on (and finding right speed when on) would be a PIA. I liked the previous scheme of the lever you would pull back to lie against the handle much better - was a more conscious and positive step to engage the drive, and easier to keep engaged as your hand moves about a bit on the handle. Safer too, IMHO. Maybe I’ll get used it it over time and find a new Zen, but (there is that dang word again) I doubt it.
Overall a fine mower I definitely would buy again. I just hope EGO goes back to the previous drive engagement scheme sometime in the next ten years before I buy my next EGO mower!
Excellent - Easy to setup and use. It has an extra battery. Plenty of power to mow thick overgrown areas. Clipping bag has decent capacity. Perfect size mower for my needs. Good speed control for self-propel feature.
Good - Weight of the mower is good. Value seems good for the money. We'll see how the blades hold up over time.
Not so good - My only gripe so far is the self propel feature doesn't always engage the first time. - This is just me being nit-picky.
Bad - Nothing so far
Ugly - Nothing
I also own the 16" String Trimmer which I bought from a brick and mortar big box store, which is pretty awesome as well.
I actually bought two more 12 amp after- market batteries & an extra charger. This way, the batteries can be rotated without waiting for recharge. I'm happy with the simple controls, light weight, stiff frame, quality construction and no hoping for the mower to start or gas to buy. It's different and it's better.
The mower designers built in a lot of features that make it hard for the user to mess up, like ensuring that the handles are locked in place before allowing ignition. The mower is self-accelerating, so going up hill is easy and there is no effort required. The mower's indicator flashes RED when you're close to using up the battery. That gives me ample time to position the mower closer to my replacement battery supply or take the mower inside for the day under its own power.
Here in the south we have 2 seasons- rake and mow. With Temps warming up its time to get the winter weeds cut down so the grass can come through. My backyard was a combination of grass, winter weeds and other forms of grassy stuff. I figured I might as well see if thos mower lives up to the hype.
What I found-
1- it's definitely got cutting power
2- the self- propel will move this mower at a pretty nice pace
3- mulches quite well.
4- 30 minutes of cut time only used up 2 of the 5 bars on the 7.5 ah battery
5- cut through my mixture of grass and weeds effortlessly.
The only minor negative I have is the self propel isn't as nuisanced as I would like. There's a pretty good jump in speed between each setting. Very, very minor inconvenience, but wanted to put it out there.
So far I give this 5 stars. It met every expectation I had. We'll see how it does over the course of the summer.
UPDATE- I have used the mower several times at different heights. It has performed well. No scalping and the mower is quite a bit lighter than my gas powered, so moving it around obstacles is easier. Battery life is good, although the lower you cut the more the mower has to work, so more power pulled from the battery. Still cutting entire yard one on charge.
I charged the battery out of the box as instructed. I set it on the second highest cutting length as snow is right around the corner. I had cut grass last week (and mulched) with my garden tractor, so there was not much grass to cut off, in all honesty. However, I ran the self-propel setting the entire time and mulched the entire time (it came out of the box already set for mulch). I have 18 trees in the yard so there was no shortage of leaves to contend with. I adjusted the walk-behind speed to my liking, and it's a great feature that is easy to keep up with. I mowed for 40 minutes and cut an area 60 x 160. The light was still showing green when I finished! I cut the power, hit the green start button again and gripped the self propel switch. It took me up a 30 degree path to the storage shed without the blade running and it climbed like a Blue Angel! I took the battery inside and put it in the quick recharge to see how much power I had left. Unbelievably I still had 2 1/2 green lights blinking out of 5!! I was shocked (again, admitting the grass was easy to cut). By the way, it did a excellent job at mulching, even at the high setting. There would have been no leaves escaping had I set the height a bit lower. I cleaned it with a quick pass of the leaf blower and will wait impatiently until spring for a chance to show off this baby full-time. I'm thinking I might even pay the neighbors for the opportunity to run this in their yard. :)
I can mow my 1/2 acre lawn in about 45 minutes now and use about 20% of the battery on full power. I’m telling you this thing is next level. I already have the EGO chain saw and it is a god send also as these 6.0 batteries are interchangeable. HIGHLY RECOMMEND!
My only complaint is that is does not cut quite short enough… at its lowest it’s about 1.25” and I would like to be closer to .75” like a fairway …but hey my grass still looks amazing just a bit longer like the second cut.
I went with this mower because I have a few other Ego products- the blower, trimmer, and edger. They have all been awesome. My only complaint has always been longevity of the batteries. Seems I have to replace those after a few years. The fact that this came with two powerful batteries made it even more appealing. I used the AH 7.0 battery today, and it had plenty of juice left when I finished my front and back yard. For the first time in recent memory, I have way more battery power than I need.
There were a few thoughtful touches I liked. One such feature was a phone case that attaches the the handle bar and keeps your phone nearby and clean while you mow.
The one nitpick I found. I decided to bag my grass today, and learned that you need to change blades when you bag your grass vs mulch. I found the blade a little bit difficult to remove. Eventually got it, but the nuts weren’t very easy to loosen. Not looking forward to swapping blades a couple times a year, but this was still a 5-star experience.
Highly recommended.
I don't require the 7.5Ah in this new mower but its comforting to know the surplus energy is available for my other Ego tools and the price for battery and mower was pleasurably reasonable. I don't cut weeds, or huge tufts of unkempt foliage, but if you've a gasoline mower in a standard size (18-22 inches deck width) you know they'll bog down if overworked. No different with the Ego. If you're cutting your yard(s) when they reach a reasonable height, the Ego will do more than any standard mower you've ever owned. With very little upkeep/ maintenence. If you're going to run it through garbage, probably better off with a Briggs and Stratton or similarly priced gasoline mower. So when it stalls and dies you need not be overly disappointed. The Ego performs reliably, consistently and is fun to use. I have ZERO complaints.
Also, I am very tall. My previous Ego handle adjusted just high enough and higher than anything I've ever tried. This one goes even higher. I am soo very pleased. Has more adjustability than its predecessor.
Thank you, Ego, for rendering a tedious chore a satisfying experience. Every time.
For perspective, over the past 15 years we’ve mowed our property with 26-28 hp gas powered riding mowers, which were loud, costly to operate as well as extremely heavy and costly to maintain…Prior to our riding mowers we hired the mowing out to expensive contractors with DR Mowers
Two years ago we switched over from gas powered yards tools to EGO Power 56-Volt battery power.
My husband and I will be 75 this year, and walking our property behind our EGO Power 56-Volt 22-Inch Self-Propelled Mower is not just a relaxing and ecological way to get our steps in — it’s more powerful than the gas riding mowers, less costly to operate with virtually no maintenance costs.
Finally, the fully assembed mower arrived at our rural location in a heavy duty box on a wood pallet, ready to use, absolutely hassle free. Five Stars!
My large, thick and healthy lawn was very long because of a springtime European vacation we took. I was eager to see how it could handle it. This mower mulched it much better than my gas mower (a Toro Recycler), mostly because it distributed the mulching better. The Toro would trap it under the right wheels. I was very pleased. It use more battery because of the heft of the grass by burning through one and a half batteries, when it normally takes one, but that is expected.
My only complaint is it does not suck the grass up into the blade like my Toro did. I think this has to do with the aerodynamics of the mulching blade more than the power of the mower. So for the parts of your lawn that have less vertical blades, they will remain long.
I love how I can fit a roll of doggy bags in the battery compartment, which is quite handy.
I love having no fluids in the mower (no gas or oil) so I can move it around without an issue.
I love how I can tilt it up on it's back wheels to expose the blade and blow the green residue out with my leaf blower, and not stink up my garage.
I can't wait to use the headlights in a night mow, coming this summer.
1) the handle has to be fully extended to engage the blades. Lower the handle to adjust for your height.
2) if grass is long and the blade height is set too low, it will cut out. It worked so much better on 3-4 setting.
3) self propel is touchy and can go from slow to very fast quickly. It is only good when going straight. Take it off to turn or go around obstacles.
4) unpacking and set up was super easy otherwise.
5) battery recharged within 30 minutes which gave me time to weed wack while waiting. Battery can't overcharge which was helpful to know.
Overall, it's pretty easy once you get the hang of it. Maybe a bit heavier than my gas mower.
I received the additional blades as well but I am having some difficulty changing them out but I may need a power tool.
10/10 recommend.
my gas-powered mower. Old gas, carb plugged up so I bought this EGO mower. Best move I've made in a long time. I think timing is everything. This machine has developed far beyond any battery powered mower I have seen. Rugged,
great battery life, 7.0-amp hours, ease of operation with 6 height adjustments with 1 handle to adjust all 4 wheels. On my gas mower I had to adjust one wheel at a time. This is the best mower by far...Battery or Gas. Buy this mower, you won't regret it!
It's easy to use, cuts well, and has a few different blade options. I upgraded the blade and thst was easy to do. I mowed for the first time two customers lawns with a mowing time of 20 minutes at one location and 45 minutes at the second location. No issues with power loss and did both locations with one battery and 25% battery life left.
The self propelled option is nice along with the throttle control. It's easy to fold up and store and move as well.
Not only do I like the mower but my customers do too.
The 7.5mah battery is a beast and having the 5mah battery for backup is just icing on cake.
I also love the quick height adjustment lever.
I can't lie......I had to buy the weedeater and 670cfm blower combo with an extra 4mah battery (those 2 arrived today). Just used all 3 today for the first time and I'm so excited to use them all summer!
I also mow later towards the end of the night and the LED lights on this badboy are amazing. The quietness of all 3 are such a plus.
At this point I'm buying everything EGO
The first time I cut my lawn was the day it arrived - I used the 5.0 that had arrived a day or two earlier and was fully charged. I had it set to trim on level 2 of 8 ... openly it did cut off a few times in a tall/thick patch (but so did my previous mower in that same spot). I went through the 5.0 battery and had to use the 4.0 to finish my quarter-acre yard. (I chalked this us to being too low) ... plus I found out it had the mulching blade on it (I didn't bother to check it before I cut- derka derka).
The second time I used it, I switched to the bagging blade, used a fully charged 7.5, and lifted to level 3 of 8. I made it though the entire yard on the single battery!
Perhaps it's just the greenness of spring, but I sincerely don't think I have ever gotten as good of a cut as I have with the EGo. What's interesting to me is that I usually only had to empty the bag twice with my old mower, but with this I have to about 6 times, so it must be doing it well. Surprisingly, the weight of the bag when full does not slow the mower down.
The self-propel works great as an assist but honestly it's so light you likely don't even need it.
My son likes the LED lights and I dig the phone holder to stop my pocket dials (happened a few times).
When we unboxed and started getting a feel for it, my son even said it was so much fun he might start cutting the grass.
For reference, my previous mower is a Husqvarna with a Honda engine.
I'll return with an update if anything changes ... but for now, I'm seeing what other tools they offer
Now that I've owned this mower awhile, I would probably buy the Select Cut. Mine came with a mulching blade which is fine for mulching, but this fall I may want to pick up leaves. The high lift blade in combination with the mulching blade would work better, overall, I think. I could add the two blades, as I've seen this done on U-tube, but I'm afraid the extra blades would labor the motor/battery. Mine has a smaller motor with less torque than the select cut models. I would also look at the Kobalt 80 volt. My daughter has one and seems to have more power than the EGO.
There are separate blades for mulching and bagging... change-out is easy, but I'd rather not have to do it. Next time I have to bag, I am going to try it leaving the mulch blades on. Only downside is this mower seems to leave more small clumps of uncut grass even though I overlap the rows as I cut and alternate cut direction each mowing. Perhaps the height setting is a touch higher than my old gas powered mower, or the old mower had more power/lift. Overall, the positives far outweigh the negatives.
Nearly completely assembled in the shipping box and very easy to use. No more gas, and noise to contend with and your neighbors will love you for the latter!
I would definitely opt for purchasing the bundle - two batteries and charger and keep an eye out for price deals, they can be had.
The mower is quiet in contrast to our gas mower.
The blades did an amazing job of sucking the clippings into the bag.
Our grass was a bit high and thick in some places and I was able to mow right through it at the full width of the mower without any bogging down. With our gas mower, I use to cut the width in half to avoid the blades bogging down.
The battery was enough for mowing the front and back. For context, we have a small front yard but a fairly descent size backyard (cul de sac lot).
After mowing, blew off dust with air compressor, removed battery and folded up to store. Easy!
All and all we are very satisfied with this mower and would recommend it.
- you love going to the gas station with a Jerry can in your trunk.
- you love to keep gasoline in your garage
- you love to change oil in small engines
- you love the sound of a gas engine
- you love starting a cold engine
- you love to winterize your gasoline mower
- you don’t appreciate adjustable self propelling power
- you don’t appreciate a perfect cut every time
- you don’t appreciate having the best quality and value available
I’ve had many mowers over the years and this is by far my favorite.
If you are shopping for an electric walk behind mower you will not be disappointed with this EGO.
Battery life is impressive.
Don’t buy cheap, buy value. This is it
We are super pleased with thus purchase!
Clean up was very easy with the EGo blower
Battery last approximately one hour which is more than enough to cut my lawn. It's very easy to use. I end up getting the weed eater and the blower.
All are fantastic. FOR SURE recommend these products. REMEMBER YOU GET WHAT YOU PAY FOR.
And guiet.
I am pleasantly surprised.
The mower performed great, nice even cut and very easy to maneuver around.
I only used 2 bars on the battery.
