This is the first ever lawnmower (Garden tool series) from Caterpillar and I am indeed excited to test this lawn mower. I have used few other battery powered mowers (Greenworks 21" 40V, Skil 40V powercore 20"), I have used some of these as comparison. Attached pictures are comparison how CAT looks relatively.
Understand the differences: DG670 vs DG671
CAT mowers are either self propelled (DG671) or push mower (DG670), but there is some confusion on the product description and pictures used here on Amazon, currently. Hopefully these will be fixed at some point. At the time of this review there is a 100 dollar difference on the pricing. But it seems like (based on the video) 671 comes with variable speed, automatic switching between batteries and battery indicator on the handle dash. 670 does not have these features and is a basic one. At the 100 buck price difference I would go for DG671, if the above features are accurate for 671.
What is in the box:
- Mower (fully assembled), 60V - 5AH battery / charger, leaf bag, side discharge chute, manual
Features worth mentioning:
- build quality looks good, body is alloy steel, which adds some weight but it feels robust
- color combination and design is ergonomic
- mulch to bag, conversion by sliding the lever instead a plastic plug is so refreshing. There is no issue of loosing or forgetting to place the plug.
- side discharge plate and chute, this is nice feature for times you want to mulch and discharge side ways not so important but this comes with the option
- large battery, 60V - 5Ah (total 300Wh capacity) that runs long. I can mow 5000sqft without the need of charging, takes around 40 min approx. It seems it can handle larger lawn around 7500 without pausing
- torque logic adjusts the power but DG670 doesn't come with variable speed which will be much more useful.
- vertical storage
-bright LED, with on/off switch
- large leaf bag capacity compared to most other on the market
Cons:
- the power is high but this also makes it louder compared to the other two mowers I currently use.
- It is priced high, almost comparable to Ego mowers which are proven to be the best in mowers. I am not sure about the value being new to the market.
- Not much handle adjustments, most mowers come with telescopic handles to be able to adjust different length but this one comes with set length with an option to adjust the angle (only 3 positions).
- mulch and bagging convert steel plate accumulate grass (mulch) with each use, unlike a plug plate that curves and form the deck shape.
- it is all steel, powder coated material giving it a rough non smooth feel. The clips to open up the handle, switch to turn the mower, are all little unrefined, feels like I can pinch my fingers on these. I have not experienced it on two other mowers I have used so far.
Overall this a high performance mower with lots of power to do the job with out pausing on medium sized (most resisdential) lawns. I will update the review if I experience issues, especially this is a 'new' category for CAT. It comes with a generous 5 year warranty.
Pro:
1) Aesthetically pleasing design
2) Big battery for longer use (with charger)
3) Self propelled option available - (Super convenient option I likely would order with if I were to order again)
4) Multiple attachments for side discharge and rear bagging
5) LOVE LOVE the deck adjustment - super easy
6) Knife blade (my term) shutoff of back grass bag chute. (nice positive feature)
7) Easy collapsible handle for easy and compact storage
8) Charged up nicely and runs smoothly
9) Great Brand Name I can trust
10) Seems very well built. Has what appears to be a composite deck so should last a very long time
Cons:
I haven't found any.
In summary, this seems like a very well built and trustworthy mower. I can't wait for spring to put it through it's paces. In hindsight, I would likely order with the self propelled option. For only a bit more $$$ it is likely worth it.
What we love:.
Comes fully assembly just adjust handle knobs to place in position house.
The battery had a charge, simply push a button to start.
Easy to Adjust the blade height by pushing a handle.
The mower self propel feature eliminates the need to push, truly effortless.
Easy to store.
My only wish is that it came with 2 batteries as would be efficient to have a back up at the ready as if not fully charged may not be able to complete the full yard. You may or may not need an additional battery to do your yard on one charge and even if you do need to purchase another this is a great product for all the reasons listed above.
Other than being quiet, I was really impressed with how easy it is to use. Just push down the red button and squeeze the lower handle to start. Raising and lowering it is also very easy and can be done with one hand (see video). I used it to knock down some pretty high grass, and it worked great. The charger was easy to use, although a little loud. I would recommend charging it in another room, if possible.
So far I am super impressed with this lawnmower. I will update the review if anything changes.
